Introduction to Mindful Leadership

mind·ful·ness /ˈmīn(d)f(ə)lnəs/ (noun)

A mental state achieved by focusing one's awareness on the present moment, while calmly acknowledging and accepting one's feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations, used as a therapeutic technique.

As a leader in the workplace, it’s oh-so easy to lose perspective sometimes. To lose ourselves in the surrounding noise. With daily deadlines due, e-mails piling up, back-to-back meetings and employees behaving differently that you need... it’s often difficult to maintain your self-identity and remain focused on your priorities, your compassion and your values.

We know, however, that the ability to remain ‘present in the moment’ while maintaining a clear understanding of your own values, desires and goals are essential qualities of all effective leaders. If you lose your spark, your ability to lead others extinguishes with it.

In this 1-hour introductory workshop, we’ll explore the direct relationship between mindfulness and leadership. After defining the foundations of mindfulness, we’ll explore the core concepts of ‘grit’, ‘self-regulation’, ‘emotional intelligence’, ‘perseverance’, the pitfalls of ‘pain avoidance’. We’ll then explore the direct correlation of having an organization of ‘mindful leaders’ to levels of employee engagement, retention and job satisfaction. Lastly, in reviewing some best practices of other organizations to identify how they help their staff (and especially their leaders) best align their careers and daily behaviors with their personal values and self-development.
